A Home of One’s Own
Designing a small home is always a great joy because, in the end, there always comes the stark realization that what we all need is a room of our own.
This envisaging of the spaces, when they are so physically intimate, immediately suggests a strong analogy with the work of a tailor.
We like to think of a place’s parts – its surfaces, the materials it is made with, its suggestions – as paper sewing patterns offering a perfect fit to the people for whom they are intended.
In this particular case, as designers, we wanted to deliver something special to the client, where childhood memories and new aims can mingle with an area of Milan that still wears an early 20th-century look.

A certain mal d’Afrique needed listening to, like the desire to see oneself represented through objects that are the fruit of a by now almost-forgotten material culture.
The sense of the place’s quality requires low light, sobriety, and discretion, and this is an awareness that some girls (now women) in particular have known how to convey in this city that we love so madly.
