Important Design Gallery

Important Design Gallery was conceived by gallerist Herat De Nicola as a space where art, design, and memory merge into a living form – daily, tangible, and accessible.

In the heart of Milan’s Monte Rosa district, behind three luminous windows overlooking a row of sweet gum trees, a space comes to life that is both a gallery and a cultural crossroads.

With refined intuition and profound \sensitivity\caring\attentiveness\, Herat welcomes all who wish to share fragments of their family history: a ’60s lamp, a designer armchair, a forgotten piece of Murano glass.

It all began when Herat, still a child, wandered through Milan’s flea markets, full of curiosity. Even then, he sensed the value of every object, well beyond its price or the passing fads of the moment. For him, the beautiful and the useful, the rare and the everyday, came together in a single, passionate vision.

Over the years, this gift matured. His expertise grew, his perspective broadened, and his understanding deepened. Herat developed a unique sensibility, one capable of recognizing Italian excellence in design and the decorative arts.

His encounters with the great masters of modernism – from Gio Ponti to Ettore Sottsass and from Gino Sarfatti to Osvaldo Borsani – and with historic manufacturers such as Venini, Fontana Arte, Gavina, Tecno, and Cassina, marked a turning point in his journey.

At the same time, his collaborations with leading international auction houses cemented his reputation as an authority in 20th-century applied arts.

Important Design Gallery soon evolved and today it also showcases painting, sculpture, and the plastic arts.

The gallery is a fluid landscape, open to post-war experimentation in art – from Informel to Spatialism – and to the movements that made Italy a crossroads of the avant-garde. Works by artists such as Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti, Agostino Bonalumi, and Alighiero Boetti enter in dialogue with iconic design pieces.

The recent renovation was conceived to enhance this very journey, combining exhibition functionality with a poetic spirit. Every detail was planned to restore light, attention, and space to the objects, in a silent invitation to slow down, observe, and imagine.
